– Ceiling Fans: You should most definitely have ceiling fans installed in every single bedroom upstairs. This is an effective way to circulate air. Just by having some circulation in the space, you can feel considerably cooler or warmer.
– Open Doors: You should avoid closing any doors in your second story as well. This doesn’t allow for the airflow that you most certainly need to keep the room cool or warm. You want your central AC unit to be able to cool the entire house, and your furnace to be able to warm the whole home, not just certain rooms.
– Window Coverings: You would be surprised at what a difference closing the blinds or window coverings on your windows upstairs can make. You will see a significant drop in temperature during the summer months when the sun isn’t able to pour into your rooms.
– Turn Fan On in Summer: On your thermostat, there is a fan function that you can use to help cool the upper level of your home. You should turn the fan from auto to on to keep the fan going. This will make sure the air is constantly moving and more evenly cooling your house.
– Change Filters: You should be changing your air filters on a regular basis. This will help you HVAC more effectively cool your house down or warm it up. A dirty air filter will make it so there is restricted airflow into your unit which can cause damage and ineffective cooling.
– Consider a Second AC Unit: You may want to consider putting a second AC unit in your home to focus on the second level. This way, you will have more control over the upstairs and how cool it is. This will give you a separate thermostat upstairs that will be controlled to meet the needs of that second story.
