How to Know if Your Air Handler is Bad in North Las Vegas, NV & How to Prevent with an HVAC Tune Up

For those who have a spilt air conditioning system, you will have a condenser that is outside of the home as well as an air handler. The air handler is located inside the home and typically in the attic. The air handler has a number of different components that help to complete a cooling cycle. ATW Mechanical will share some of the common problems of an air handler to help keep your system running smoothly.

What Happens when Air Filters are Dirty?

Even though the air filters are on the inside of the home, they do connect directly to your air handler. The air inside the home is sucked up and into the air handler. It is the air filters that help to keep the dirt out of the air handler. The air handlers must be kept clean. The evaporator coils can become dirty if the air filters aren’t properly maintained. Often the homeowner will forget or they will not ever change out the air filters. It is very important to change out to the air filter to keep the air handler healthy.

Dirty Evaporator Coils Can Become Clogged?

The evaporator coils, as previously mentioned, remove the vapor in the air and condensation will build up on the surface of the coils. When the evaporator coils are covered in condensation it is endanger of dirt and other particles getting trapped in the condensation. Over time the trapped particles will build up until the coils are packed with a muddy, gooey substance. Once the coils get too dirty, they can no longer remove the heat and vapor from the air. It is common for the evaporator coils to require cleaning. However, with yearly tune ups, the coils are always cleaned which will prevent the coils from becoming dirty. To ensure a healthy system you should always have your air conditioner tuned-up yearly. Some people will attempt to do their own evaporator coil cleaning. However, the coils are made of very thin metal fins that can be damaged easily if they are not cleaned properly. It is highly recommended that you have a professional clean your evaporator coils.

Bad Blower Motor

Another major component of the air handler is the blower. The blower and its motor sends the cooled air through the home. The blower needs to be cleaned to remove the dust that builds up on the fan’s blades. This is another basic step in maintaining your air conditioner. However, over time the blower’s motor will overheat and beak down. It is common for the blower motor to be replaced at least once in the life time of your air conditioner. When the blower motor fails, you will notice no air flowing through the air ducts and into the home. In addition, you will not hear the motor running.
